Snow, Snow and More Snow

Since Mother Nature decided to visit over the weekend with a record breaking "weekend before Christmas" snow storm she certainly put the skids on all of us "last minute" shoppers! It was nice to see some borough residents out for a stroll during the storm.
Boots, snowpants, snowsuits and snowbibs were the request of the day at The Growing Tree - children's department! Some got just what they needed, others did not. Our ladies department had a pair of gloves for that one person who forgot hers! Yes, The Mushroom Cap and The Growing Tree are in the same building - never know what you are going to find at 114 W State Street in Kennett Square, PA.
The snow brings back childhood memories of growing up in Kennett Square - sledding down Lafayette Street from Ridge Avenue down to Scarlett - long walk back up but oh, what a ride, sledding in the backyards of homes on Mason Avenue where one of the neighbors made an ice ramp - I jumped on a sled, six others piled on top -I couldn't breathe - scared me to death! The best memory was walking with my Mom to my grandparent's house on Broad Street! Everything becomes so peaceful when there is a significant snowfall.

Snack N Shrooms™

Was lucky enough to get some publicity in the Kennett Paper for my Snack N Shrooms!

Where have I been? What have I been doing? Making and selling snacks! And working on the Mushroom Festival. Festival is coming together - last minute details to work out. What would we do without volunteers?

People have been visiting The Mushroom Cap and seeing that they are going to miss the Mushroom Festival and are very disappointed. A couple was in from Germany this week on their way to NYC. (they purchased two ounces of spicy snacks and one of mild). Two weeks ago a couple was in from VA to buy their pink admission wristbands for the festival as well as their farm tour tickets. People are calling every day wanting information. This event brings people home to Kennett Square! Friends and family alike! Gotta love Kennett Square!

Mushroom Capital of the World - t-shirt

Weeks ago a woman came into The Mushroom Cap and asked if we had any shirts or hats with "Mushroom Capital of the World" on them. I did not at the time but knew that it was something that I needed to have. Her son was traveling to China in three weeks to study for eight weeks. He wanted something to take with him from the "Mushroom Capital of the World". I promised that I would have shirts done. Here is the design that I came up with. The best of all is that the young man who was going to China said he loved the shirt! He took 4 of them with him. There is a small mushroom on the map where Kennett Square is. We have this shirt in black, green and red.

TV and .......................

Last Tuesday we had NBC 10 come to The Mushroom Cap to interview me for a segment about
Discovering Out Town. I wasn't sure when it would air but it did on Thursday night. Apparently it aired again this morning . We had folks from Philadelphia visit The Mushroom Cap today who had seen it. The segment included Talula's Table and also a business in West Chester.
How lucky to have been chosen! It did just what we wanted it to - bring people to town. I have not seen the segment but found a short clip showing Claudia Rivero tasting my new mushroom snack that was on the NBC 10 Morning Show at 11 on Thursday, July 9th. Can't seem to find the clip that made the news.

Tomorrow a production company is coming to town to visit The Mushroom Cap on their way from Maine to the Florida Keys. A film is being produced about America's Number 1 Highway - Route 1. I wonder how The Mushroom Cap was chosen? Might ask that question tomorrow!

Penn State Great Valley event

Today was a busy day getting ready for an event that Penn State Great Valley was hosting. A Taste of Wyeth featuring a presentation by Victoria Wyeth, granddaughter of Andrew Wyeth was a very well attended event. Before the presentation attendees enjoyed a wine tasting provided by Chadds Ford Winery. To go with the Wine Tasting a few of Chester County's food specialty shops were asked to provide "tastings" of their products. The Mushroom Cap was suggested by Greg from the CCCVB to be one of those shops. We chose to serve our Italian Mushroom Dip stuffed medium white (picked this morning)mushrooms. Everyone who had one wanted a second. What a difference a very fresh picked mushroom makes! We also served our Roasted Portabella Pasta Sauce on small bread slices. Another big hit!

This was a great night for promoting The Mushroom Cap, showing our Mushroom Cap labeled products as well as our "Shiitake Happens" gift basket, and promoting mushrooms as Pennsylvania's No. 1 Cash Crop all along telling everyone that we are located on State Street in Kennett Square!

Snackin' 'Shrooms/ now called Snacknshrooms!

Get ready to taste snackin' 'shrooms! I'm working on them - might be one of those snacks that are really good for you!

Does anyone read my blog?

Been a while since I've written - Since the last post we did have a bus tour visit "The Mush-Room" - That was Thursday, June 18th. A Perkiomen group from Bucks County - The Pearl Buck volunteers. They were great - expected something different but all left with a smile on their face! Anyone interested in our industry video? Those who watched learned a lot about Chester County Mushroom Growing. Mr. bus driver was so nice -he will be sure to tell the Perkiomen groups coming to Longwood Gardens to make a stop in downtown KSQ. This picture shows only a few of the 31 passengers!

Weather was not good. After the bus left the shop we immediately closed to be on our way to the Jimmy Buffett concert in Camden, NJ. Now that's another story! Great time - good friends - past our bedtime but who cared? And we didn't get wet!

No Show Bus Tour

Wonder what happened to the bus tour from Philadelphia that was coming to KSQ today at 3:30pm?
A little disappointing to say the least, especially when one prepares for a group with tastings and a cooler full of mushrooms. We called your cell phone Jerry - three times this past week just to check to see if you were coming. We stayed open an extra hour waiting. A lesson learned - must ask for a confirmation phone call one week prior to trip.

Good to stay open later - had a few more sales for the day!

Mushrooms and Your Health

Mushrooms truly are "Nature's Hidden Treasure". They have been called a "superfood". There is a saying - "Eat Mushrooms and Live Longer" - Could that be? Mushrooms have been around for thousands of years and we, in America, are just now learning the benefits of these fabulous fungi! I've included a link to the nutrition research. Take time to read it. Explore the website - learn all about mushrooms. Ask yourself, "what can mushrooms do for me?" You may be surprised.

Two more 3rd grade classes from Mary D Lang

Our 2nd day of visits from the 3rd grade students at Mary D Lang Elem. School yesterday was great. They had a nice day to walk uptown - weather was perfect as was the day before. What has more potassium than a banana? A mushroom - this is just one of the facts that is learned in our 10 minute video. One other fact is that PA's No. 1 crop is mushrooms - so important to the economy of PA. There is so much to learn about the mushroom industry in our area. Both classes today were attentive. Some tasted our mushrooms with ranch dressing, some tasted the mushrooms without and some did not taste at all. All classes were given a portabella mushroom with instructions on how to make a spore print. That should be a fun project. The morning class selected the Oyster Mushroom as their favorite and the afternoon class chose the Maitake!
Teachers, parents and students - thank you - we hope everyone enjoyed the trip as much as we enjoyed having you!

Mary D Lang 3rd Graders visit

Mary D Lang elementary school is just a few blocks from The Mushroom Cap. Yesterday, 3rd Grade students, their teachers and a few parents walked uptown to visit the Mushroom Museum. The first class arrived at 10 am and the other at 1 pm. Both classes were very attentive. We showed our 10 minute video, let each student peek through the mushroom shaped peep hole and let them each taste fresh mushrooms if they wanted to. We were sure to tell them how proud they should be of an industry that is so important to the economy of Pennsylvania. Many of the students have parents who work in the industry. Some had been to a mushroom house before and some had not. We chose 4 different mushrooms and asked the classes to vote on their favorite - both classes chose the same mushroom - MAITAKE. Why? Mostly because of the way it looks - like a piece of coral in the ocean. We also told the children about the nutritional value of mushroom - 4% vitamin D in all mushrooms - the only plant life that has vitamin D.

We had fun and hope the children did too! It is always good to educate them about the heritage of Kennett Square, PA. There will be two more 3rd grade classes coming today.

Visitors to Kennett Square

Today was a pretty exciting day in the "Mush-Room". We had visitors from Israel. They came from Philadelphia on their way to Baltimore via "old Route 1" - they wanted to take the scenic route rather than I-95. They enjoyed their stop at The Mushroom Cap - learning about our heritage here in Kennett Square, PA. We enjoyed their visit.

Flat Stanley was here!

Flat Stanley arrived at the "Mush Room" today! He had his picture taken under a toadstool, next to a shiitake log and also at the mushroom house display! What fun it is for those students at St. Ignatious Loyola. Could this be the only Flat Stanley to visit a mushroom exhibit? He will have so much to tell about Kennett Square being the Mushroom Capital of the World!

Who is Flat Stanley? Read below.

Well, the project is about a book written by Jeff Brown- Flat Stanley. This book narrates the story of a boy called Stanley who was squashed by a bulletin board whilst he was comfortably sleeping in bed. In the morning, his family realised that Stanley had become flat and that he could now pass underneath doors, travel in envelopes etc. Infact, it is here that the project starts. Every class participating in the project reads the book and draws her own Flat Stanley. Children then send their Flat Stanley to other schools around the world on school visits, at home etc. Then, after this period of time, Flat Stanley returns back home full of pictures, souveniers, photos and information about the place he visited.

What is that smell?

Oh my gosh! It is Kennett Square mushrooms drying in the dehydrator. Love that aroma! KSQ crimini, shiitake, oyster and maitake mushrooms are being dried in the "Mush-Room" at The Mushroom Cap. Why? Well, visitors who are traveling and cannot take fresh KSQ mushrooms with them take dried KSQ mushrooms! A real taste of KSQ. Pictured here are dried KSQ shiitake mushrooms! These are great added to our packaged Mushroom Chowder - serve to your guests and they will think you made it fresh!
To reconstitute dried mushrooms: Soak in warm water for 20 minutes. Depending on your recipe you can also soak in wine.

A return visit

If you have read through my posts you may remember a group of "Red Hats" - they were here months ago. Yesterday one of those ladies drove to Kennett Square, PA just to get some of our fresh mushrooms! She remembered how fresh and delicious they were.
She was a happy camper especially getting her free lb. of button mushrooms!

A young student from the Radnor School District chose Kennett Square, PA for a school project. She and her mother came to The Mushroom Cap yesterday, leaving with an education about mushrooms, how they grow, how nutritious they are and how many are grown and shipped from our part of the world. We make sure that PA residents and others know that mushrooms are Pennsylvania's No.1 Commodity and how the industry is important to Pennsylvania's economy.
Mom and daughter will surely be back for a return visit to Kennett Square.

Harrington's Coffee Company

We have added Harrington's Coffee to our list of Kennett Square items available for purchase at The Mushroom Cap. One pound packages of #45 (decaf available too) is a nice addition to our KSQ gift baskets. You can not only purchase this coffee by the pound you can come in and have a complimentary cup (gratuity appreciated) any day of the week!

Harrington's Coffee Company, est. 1995, provided a great gathering place on State Street then on Broad Street in KSQ for business meetings, friendly chats, internet accessability, a visit with Santa and more for 13 years. Eveyone can remember the cozy, comfy atmosphere in the room with the fireplace. Amazing what a long ago car dealership can become. "Mushroom Capital of the World" on our water tower became reality in 2007 because of several early morning meetings with Al Willard, Dennis Melton and myself at Harrington's! We watched the Augustine family grow at the "big" table building memories for all. How about the time we did a short film clip about Kennett Square to submit to the "View"? Many locals sat front and center at Harrington's to watch the Franklin Center construction across the street. These are just a few of my memories - so many more for others who frequented Harrington's more often than I. Most can remember artist, Rea Redifer as part of the storescape in good weather. Rea, we miss you, Mrs. Harrington (Carla Willard), we miss you too but happy you are sill providing us with your coffee!

Some Kennett Square residents who frequented Harrington's often will be moving to NC soon. They will take with them memories and gifts from KSQ including a pound of Harrington's coffee, compliments of their friends and neighbors. When they get settled in and sit down to their cup of #45 they will surely remember the good times had in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, Mushroom Capital of the World.

Hope to see you all soon!

Easy marinated button mushrooms

Have you ever tried Garlic Expressions Salad Dressing on mushrooms?
Cloves of garlic await you. Cut the stems of several pounds of button mushrooms to make them perfect little buttons. Blanch (not sure how to do this? - search "how to blanch vegetables) them for about 1 minute - drain - place mushrooms in glass bowl - pour the whole bottle of Garlic Expressions over the mushrooms. Refrigerate. Quick and delicious way to serve white button mushrooms that are soooooo good for us! Vitamin D - white mushrooms and breast cancer, white mushrooms and prostate cancer - do your research. Mushrooms are the only plant life that have Vitamin D.

Too long to wait at Longwood Gardens

Had lots of visitors to The Mushroom Cap this weekend - From Columbia, MD, Baltimore, MD, Atlanta, GA, Philadelphia, PA, York, PA, Media, PA and beyond.
Found it interesting that two people stopped by after having a bite to eat at one of Kennett Square's fine restaurants. They came to KSQ to eat! The Terrace Restaurant at Longwood Gardens had a 1 1/2 hour wait today. Does everyone know that downtown KSQ is only 2 miles from Longwood Gardens? Why wait to eat?
Too hot too soon? Not for those who wanted to grill marinated portabellas - had two guys come to town on motorcycles - stopped in for ports yesterday - were taking them back to Philadelphia for their dinner. This just reminded me of the four young people who came to The Mushroom Cap a few years ago. They arrived at Toughkenamon airport and hitched a ride to The Mushroom Cap to buy mushrooms to take back to Washington, DC for their dinner. How adventurous is that?

Morels arrived today

Morels are available - not let's see who is reading my blog! These are the best morels that I have ever had at The Mushroom Cap. Have you seen this t-shirt? Gotta love it!

More visitors from England today!

I am going to start taking pictures of our visitors - hopefully they will let me share them with you. Three young ladies from England visited The Mushroom Cap today and were in awe of being in a room filled with mushrooms! They will be in the area for 10 days - going to NYC for a few days - lucky them! They bought KSQ post cards to send back home.

At the end of the day someone came in to buy my fresh mushroom salad! She couldn't resist telling me about her niece going to Paris, France for a convention having to do with tourism where she was receiving an award. What she thought would be interesting to me was that on the menu at the dinner was a course serving: "world known Kennett Square, PA mushrooms". The niece couldn't resist telling her aunt! Gotta love it Kennett Square! We are on the map!

A peek - at mushroom picking!

Today I received a couple of pictures that were taken at The Mushroom Cap's mushroom exhibit over the weekend. The photographer was nice enough to send them to me. One was of our model of a mushroom growing facilty - the other is here. Isn't this a great picture? The mushroom tour starts here!

Today we had visitors from London on their way to Hershey, PA. They came via Philadelphia and decided that fresh mushrooms would be the perfect gift. Our 3 lb. mixed box (2 portabellas, medium whites, crimini, shiitake, oyster and 4 large white stuffing mushrooms)was the perfect choice. When I asked them to sign our guest book they were amazed at where from around the world people have come from - felt like they were our next door neighbors in comparison! Wow!

It's April, It's Spring - Eat Mushrooms!

For those of you who are following my blog - I've been doing facebook and twitter. Still have a lot to learn but I am amazed at how the networking works! I did invite Michelle Obama and her family to Kennett Square, PA to visit a mushroom farm. I commend her for having a garden at the White House but mushrooms cannot grow in her garden. The girls have learned to eat some veggies from seeing how they grow. Maybe they will come to the Annual Mushroom Festival in September and go on a farm tour! I hope they are eating mushrooms! I'll let you know if the Obama's come to town.

Today we had visitors from several different places - MI, NJ, DC, MD, WV, Western PA, Manhattan and Long Island NY, DE and beyond. Do you have morels? Maybe - will find out on Monday. How many would you like?

Now here is a story - today a mother and her son came to The Mushroom Cap looking for Maitake liquid. Just got an order in on Tuesday. The young man was just diagnosed with cancer of the salivary gland. Because his grandmother had stage 4 lung cancer, having gone through an operation, chemo, etc. and finally taking maitake and is in remission, Mom wanted to start her son on Maitake right away.
Do your own research. My husband and I take Maitake tablets every day hoping to keep the yin and the yang in our bodies balanced. Mushrooms were put on this earth for a reason! Be sure to eat them. Fresh maitake mushrooms are delicious. Just saute them in butter or olive oil with garlic.

Shiitake and Maitake Mushrooms - Biggest immunity punch

Just have to suggest that you try maitake mushrooms. Not only do they taste good when sauted in butter or olive oil and garlic but they are good for keeping the "yin and yang" right in our bodies! Does eating maitake mushrooms protect the good cells while taking chemo therapy? Do your own research. I just had maitake mushrooms for dinner tonight. Yummy! I will take two maitake capsules in the morning hoping to keep my immune system in check. Need some? The Mushroom Cap has fresh maitake mushrooms daily. Also on hand are fresh shiitake, whites, portabellas, oyster and crimini.

Mushrooms

For centuries, people around the world have turned to mushrooms for a healthy immune system. Contemporary researchers now know why. "Studies show that mushrooms increase the production and activity of white blood cells, making them more aggressive. This is a good thing when you have an infection," says Douglas Schar, director of the Institute of Herbal Medicine in Washington. Shiitake and maitake mushrooms, now available fresh in U.S. supermarkets, appear to pack the biggest immunity punch. They're easy to use too. Just add a handful to pasta sauce, saute with a little oil and add to eggs, or heap triple-decker style on a frozen pizza. Good news for absent-minded chefs: "Basically, you can burn them, and they will still powerfully stimulate the immune system," says Schar.
